When first starting the Christmas Card project I knew that I wanted stippling to be a major factor in my piece. I started by stippling the darkest areas of the sky and slowly worked my way over to the lighter areas. As I did this hours upon hours when by. Eventually the grueling task was finished. However I still needed to work on the main focus on the image itself, the three magi. So I went forth and continuously added layer after layer of hatching and crosshatching until I had my base composition down with some shading. Yet just having a good composition is not the only part of a work of art that makes it amazing. One must also use various techniques such as contrast and the use of a focal point to draw in the viewers attention. This being so I then darkened up all of the shadows (something that I have trouble doing) and also reinforced the focal point by adding more contrast to where the viewers attention should be. By the end of this piece, I had a new appreciation for the overall values of contrast within a drawing. Without it the work looks bland and wont catch the viewers attention what so ever. In addition to the appreciation to contrast I also gained a greater appreciation to those who work through stippling. I have truly found out how painful and grueling of a task it is yet at the same time the reward it gives when done properly.
